Due to player safety, the coaches and umpires agreed to move game two of the series to 10 a.m. Sunday for a doubleheader on campus. Game three will be played immediately following the morning contest. The Gophers' Bark in the Park event presented by Wellhaven Pet Health will now be held for both games of Sunday's doubleheader.
Minnesota (19-23, 9-7 Big Ten) got 10.2 shutout innings out of its bullpen, while Ohio State (24-21, 7-9 Big Ten) held the Gophers scoreless over the first eight extra innings on the day. Patrick Fredrickson (2-3) struck out one in 2.0 hitless innings to earn the victory, while the Buckeyes' Will Pfennig (0-3) took the tough-luck loss in the bottom of the 18th after allowing one run on four hits in 3.1 innings.
Eli Wilson's ninth inning single against OSU reliever Andrew Magno brought home Zack Raabe to tie the game at 4-4. Raabe reached with a walk leading off the inning, the seventh time Minnesota had put the lead off man on base in the game. Magno threw over 100 pitches in 7.0 innings of relief, walking eight batters (three intentional) while striking out eight.
Brett Schulze struck out nine in 5.1 innings of work, scattering three hits on the day. Nick Lackney needed just one pitch to force a double play in the top of the 14th before coming back to strike out the side the next inning. He finished with five punchouts in 2.2 innings of shutout relief.
The aces took the hill to start the game and did not disappoint. An unearned run by the Buckeyes in the fourth was the difference headed to the bottom of the sixth, but pinch hitter Eduardo Estrada, Jr. singled home Eli Wilson for the game-tying run.
Garrett Burhenn tossed the first 5.2 innings for Ohio State, surrendering just one earned on two outs while leaving without a decision on his record. Estrada's single came off reliever Bayden Root before the right-hander could close out the sixth.
Max Meyer threw 7.1 innings for the Gophers, striking out seven while allowing three earned on five hits. Meyer tried to help his own case as Minnesota loaded up the bases in the seventh. Jack Wassel's RBI single brought home Ben Mezzenga with the go-ahead run, but Meyer was thrown out at the plate trying to add some insurance.
Ohio State chased Meyer in the top of the eighth, bringing home the game-tying run on an RBI grounder by Dillon Dingler who then came around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
NOTABLE
The Maroon & Gold stranded 27 runners on the basepaths compared to just nine for Ohio State ... the Buckeyes walked 15 batters, the Gophers four, and Minnesota collected 22 strikeouts as a staff on the day ... time of game was 5 hours, 45 minutes ... the last NCAA baseball game to last at least 18 innings saw Rice defeat Houston 3-2 in 20 innings on May 31, 2015.
UP NEXT
The two teams will conclude their Big Ten Conference series at Siebert Field in a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
