Former Gopher Jalen Myrick is the fastest Big Ten player ever to run the 40 at the NFL Combine
Former Minnesota defensive back Jalen Myrick is set to compete in the new 40 Yards of Gold, which is an upcoming tournament-style competition that will crown the fastest professional football player.
The event will feature NFL stars racing head-to-head in a high-stakes, one-night extravaganza and will culminate with the champion of the offensive division facing the champion of the defensive division. Fans can vote for their favorite participant in the competition and votes will help determine seeding. Voting ends on Wednesday, May 15.
Myrick is one of 12 defensive players in the competition and one of 24 players overall who will be competing. He is also the fastest Big Ten player to ever run the 40 at the NFL Combine, as he was clocked at a blistering 4.28 in 2017. Myrick's lightning-fast time is tied for the fifth-fastest 40 at the combine ever, making him a potential favorite to advance far in the competition.
Myrick played for the Gophers from 2013-16 and made 93 tackles. He also notched five interceptions and returned two of them for touchdowns. He was also a standout track athlete at Savannah Christian Prep in Georgia and was the state runner-up in the 100m as a junior with a time of 10.69 seconds.
Myrick was drafted in the 7th round, 222nd overall in the 2017 NFL Draft by Jacksonville. He has spent time in the NFL with the Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings.
