Phillies Select Schulze in Seventh Round of MLB Draft
6/4/2019 3:54:00 PM | Baseball
The Philadelphia Phillies made right-handed pitcher Brett Schulze the latest Golden Gopher to be selected in the MLB Draft, selecting the Minnesota closer in the seventh round with the 210th overall pick on Tuesday.
After beginning his career as a starter, Schulze moved to the bullpen for the Gophers in 2018 where he earned nothing but success for the Maroon & Gold. From May 19, 2017 until April 27, 2019, the right-hander pitched in 45 games without suffering a defeat, finishing 14-0 in that stretch. His 18-4 career record is tied for seventh-best in program history and his nine saves in 2019 rank sixth-most in a single season and 10th most in a career over the 131-year history of the Minnesota baseball team.
In 2019, he made 30 appearances out of the bullpen, finishing 5-1 with a 3.07 ERA in 41.0 innings, striking out 55 batters. Those 30 appearances marked the second-most ever for a Gopher and ranked no. 46 in the nation. His nine saves also ranked no. 60 nationally and sixth most in the Big Ten. For his career, Schulze has a 3.81 ERA in 163.0 innings spanning 67 games, including 14 starts. He struck out 160 batters compared to just 66 walks.
The seventh-round selection is the highest for a Gophers pitcher since the Colorado Rockies selected Lucas Gilbreath in the same round in the 2017 Draft. Entering Tuesday, the Maroon & Gold boasted 130 Draft picks dating back to 1966; the program has produced 36 Major Leagues including MLB Hall of Famers Dave Winfield ('73) and Paul Molitor ('77). Minnesota had four players picked in 2018 including its highest pick since 2010, Rockies third-round choice Terrin Vavra.
The MLB Draft continues Tuesday and Wednesday with several current, former, and future Gophers eligible to be selected.
