Checking in on Gopher Hurlers
8/1/2019 10:40:00 AM | Baseball
MINNEAPOLIS - Since the conclusion of the 2019 college baseball season in May, various Gophers have been competing in summer baseball leagues throughout the country in order to improve and prepare for the 2020 campaign. This offseason, Minnesota players can be found on rosters spanning from coast to coast, including the Cape Cod League, Northwoods League, Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League, California Collegiate League and the Sunbelt Baseball League.
On the pitching side of things, incoming freshman Trent Schoeberl was named the Perfect Game CBL's Pitcher of the Week for his performance on the mound from July 14-21. Schoeberl threw five innings of shutout baseball to win the award, striking out a week-high nine batters.
Here is a full summer league overview on all Minnesota pitchers.
Nolan Burchill | RHP, Saugerties Stallions | Perfect Game CBL
Following his most recent outing on July 27, Burchill is currently 1-0 with a 4.29 ERA across 44 innings on the hill. The Sioux Falls, S.D. native has pitched in nine games (eight starts) for the Stallions, racking up 48 strikeouts that equates to a strong 9.8 K/9.
Joshua Culliver | RHP, Bourne Braves | Cape Cod League
After a sophomore campaign in which he finished second on the team in innings pitched and fourth in strikeouts, Culliver has had to work through more tough outings this summer than in the regular season. Appearing in nine games (one start) in the highly competitive Cape Cod League, Culliver has fired 18 1/3 innings of 7.85 ERA ball. These numbers appear to be somewhat deceiving, however, as Culliver has been solid for the vast majority of the offseason – 11 of the young righty's 16 earned runs have come in two combined games.
Patrick Fredrickson | RHP, Hyannis Harbor Hawks | Cape Cod League
Fredrickson finds himself in a similar boat as Culliver, as he is learning to pitch through his share of struggles this summer. In 10 games (three starts), the rising junior possesses a 9.72 ERA. On the plus side, Fredrickson has managed to whiff a promising 24 batters in just 25 innings of work.
Michael Gurka | RHP, Western Nebraska Pioneers | Expedition League
As Gurka prepares for his first semester on campus, he has shown signs of brilliance on the mound in Expedition League action. Pitching to the tune of a 2-1 record in five games (four starts), the Clarendon Hills, Ill. native owns a 5.00 ERA across 18 innings for the Pioneers. Gurka has also recorded 19 strikeouts this offseason.
Bubba Horton | LHP, Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
Horton has thrown the second-most innings among Gopher arms this summer, piling up 24 2/3 dominant frames of 2.91 ERA ball. Pitching primarily out of the bullpen, the southpaw has overwhelmed Northwoods League hitters with 29 strikeouts (10.6 K/9) and just 14 hits allowed across 12 appearances.
Danny Kapala | LHP, Saugerties Stallions | Perfect Game CBL
Having seen little action for the Gophers as a sophomore in 2019, Kapala has done nothing but improve and raise eyebrows during the offseason. His 2.41 summer ERA is second among all Minnesota pitchers and comes paired with a large sample size of 18 2/3 innings. In 14 relief appearances, Kapala boasts a 5-1 record with 19 strikeouts.
J.P. Massey | RHP, Academy Barons | California Collegiate League
With the Barons' season already in the books, Massey wrapped up a commendable campaign in the CCL that featured a 3.95 ERA over 17 1/3 innings pitched. Massey worked solely as a relief arm for Academy, appearing in nine games and using 22 strikeouts to sport a hefty 11.4 K/9.
Max Meyer | RHP, USA Collegiate National Team
Team USA has also wrapped up its summer slate, as Meyer was in complete control throughout his time representing the Maroon and Gold. The All-Big Ten Second Team selection pitched in four games (three starts) for USA, finishing with a pristine 0.64 ERA with 12 strikeouts across 14 innings. During his time with Team USA, Meyer had the opportunity to face national teams from Cuba, Japan and Taiwan.
Trent Schoeberl | RHP, Saugerties Stallions | Perfect Game CBL
Schoeberl may have garnered Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this month, but he has also proven to be a workhorse during his time with Stallions. The White Bear Lake, Minn. native has amassed 37 innings on the bump this offseason, the top mark of any Gopher playing summer baseball. Schoeberl has made eight appearances (seven starts), working to a 6.32 ERA with 28 batters set down on strikes.
Sam Thoresen | RHP, Hyannis Harbor Hawks | Cape Cod League
Thoresen has enjoyed a fairly successful season in the Cape Cod League, having thrown 20 2/3 innings of 5.66 ERA ball with a whopping 28 strikeouts. Pitching in five games (four starts) for the Harbor Hawks, the rising junior has allowed significantly fewer hits (12) than innings pitched.
Additionally, the following players saw limited action with their respective summer league teams.
Ryan Duffy | LHP, Fond du Lac Dock Spiders | Northwoods League
In three games for the Dock Spiders, Duffy pitched four innings and registered a 2.25 ERA.
Gus Radel | RHP, St. Cloud Rox | Northwoods League
Radel made three appearances out of the pen this summer, striking out five batters across 5 1/3 innings pitched.
