Gophers Prepared for North Dakota State Exhibition
8/15/2019 10:38:00 AM | Soccer
The defending Big Ten Tournament champions hit the field for the first time this year for an exhibition against their neighbors to the Northwest, North Dakota State. The game takes place at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul at 2:00pm CT.
Minnesota holds an 8-0 all-time record against the Bison and Saturday's match will mark the sixth time the two non-conference foes meet at ELR Stadium.
The Gophers have outscored the Bison 26-2 and have not allowed a goal in their last three meetings. Last season the Gophers ran over the Bison by a score of 4-0 with goals from Makenzie Langdok and Nikki Albrecht as well as a brace from the now graduated April Bockin.
While the Gophers lose five starters from last year, including multiple who now play professionally, the Gophers return six starters with 10 freshmen and multiple transfers joining the squad.
The exhibition against North Dakota State will be the first time the 2019 Gophers squad will play in front of their fans since an Oct.18 victory over Iowa last season.
After the exhibition, the Gophers hit the road for four consecutive road games, two in California followed by two in Oxford, Mississippi. The Gophers first official 2019 home game comes on Sept. 5 against Marquette with multiple promotions for fans.
The Gophers game against the Golden Eagles will be the Plymouth Community Day as well as High School day where teams who submit their rosters can receive free admission to the game.
Plus, the 2018 Big Ten Tournament Championship Trophy will be on display with an opportunity to take fans.
CAPTAIN OF THE SHIP
The 2019 Gophers' captains are seniors Marisa Windingstad and Nikki Albrecht who have each taken their own path to become captains of the reigning Big Ten champions.
Albrecht, a Wisconsin native, has started all 65 games of her career and has five goals to go along with eight assists. Alternatively, Windingstad didn't appear in any games her freshman season and only made six appearances as a sophomore, but worked hard and started all 23 games of her 2018 junior season.
Now the duo is helping the lead Gophers together.
GLOBE TROTTERS
The 29 Gophers that make up the 2019 Gophers come from 13 states and provinces across North America. The biggest constituency, 12, are Minnesota natives with the five Wisconsin natives following suit.
The next highest contingent comes from Utah, including two seniors and one freshmen. There are then eight Gophers who are the lone representatives of their home regions including Cachet Lue representing all of Canada on her own.
The full list of Gophers representing their state: Keziah Inniss (California), Athena Kuehn (Colorado), Megan Gray (Iowa), Paige Elliott (Ohio), Katie Duong (Oregon), Cachet Lue (Ontario), Patricia Ward (Virginia), Maddie Nielsen (Washington).
SENIOR SQUAD
The Gophers have six seniors on their squad including TCU transfer Cachet Lue. Lue joins TJ McKendrick, Catherine BIllings, Nikki Albrecht, Marisa Windingstad, and Haley Hartkemeyer as the elder statesmen on the Gopher squad.
While the others have spent their entire careers in Minnesota, Lue comes to the Gophers after four seasons and 64 starts in Fort Worth, Texas, for the Horned Frogs.
YOUNG BLOOD
The Gophers have one of the youngest teams in the Big Ten with 17 players on the roster underclassmen including 10 freshmen. Born on October 17, 2001, Keziah Inniss is the youngest Gopher while Cachet Lue is the oldest as a graduate transfer born on March 26, 1997.
