ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Gopher soccer team defeated North Dakota State University 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in their lone exhibition matchup before kicking off the 2019 season.
The Maroon and Gold were paced by two first half goals from freshman Katie Duong before Megan Gray added the final goal for the Gophers in the 55th minute. Duong's first goal came on the rebound from her own penalty kick miss while her second goal came off a cross from Patricia Ward.
Gray's goal came off a wild scramble in front of the Bison goalkeeper that she finally put in the back of the net with her right foot.
The Gophers have now shutout the Bison in three straight matchups and lead the all-time series 9-0. In the past four meetings, the Gophers have outscored the Bison 29-2.
Defensively the Gophers stood strong despite nine shots by the Bison. Goalkeepers Maddie Nielsen and Ana Aguado combined for four saves with Aguado saving three direct shots on goal. Minnesota allowed the Bison only one opportunity for a corner kick.
Gophers travel to California next week to face both UC Santa Barbara and California State University at Fullerton to officially start the 2019 season.
