Gophers Draw UCSB 2-2 in Season Opener
8/22/2019 11:59:00 PM | Soccer
After allowing a goal in the third minute of the season opener, the Gopher soccer team scored two consecutive goals to take the lead for much of the game but ultimately finished in a 2-2 draw with UC Santa Barbara.
"Disappointed in the final result just because we felt like we created enough to win the game," head coach Stef Golan said postgame. "The positives we have to take away are that it's a point on the road which is a hard thing to get sometimes. It's a multi-goal game with Makenzie [Langdok] scoring two goals in two different ways with different people setting her up each time."
The Gophers are now unbeaten in season openers since 2013, one year after coach Golan arrived in Minnesota.
Junior Makenzie Langdok, a Saint Michael, Minnesota, native scored both Gophers goals with one in each half. Her first goal, in the 19th minute, came off a Patricia Ward cross that Langdok headed home to the left of the Gauchos goalkeeper.
Her second goal came in the 56th minute when Langdok used her left foot to curve the ball around the UCSB defender to bury it home in the back of the net. Freshman Manthy Brady assisted Langdok's second goal.
Freshman Katie Duong nearly sent the Gophers home victorious but her shot from 30-yards out bounced off the crossbar in the 109th minute.
The Gophers spent much of their time in their offensive third as evidenced by their eight corner kicks compared to four for the Gauchos. Minnesota also earned 11 free kicks due to double-digit UCSB fouls, including eight in just the first half.
The Gauchos scored early and late in the third minute and then the 83rd minute. Shaelan Murison, the Gauchos leading scorer last season, curved home a goal past an extended Maddie Nielsen to get them started while Jessica Wright buried the ball during a scramble to tie the game late and force extra time.
The Gophers travel to Fullerton, California, to face Cal-State Fullerton at 5pm CT on Sunday to close out the first road swing of the year for the squad.
