FULLERTON - The Gopher soccer team dropped their Sunday afternoon match against Cal State Fullerton 2-0 at Titan Stadium to close out their first road swing of the 2019 season.
Minnesota struggled to rev up the offense and mustered only one shot in the 90-degree heat of Southern California. The Gophers earned eight free kicks and four corner kicks but weren't able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Junior forward Makenzie Langdok, who scored two in the season opener, notched the lone shot in the 65th minute.
The Titans scored two goals with her in net, but junior goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen did make three saves as well as multiple great plays to punch the ball away from the Titans attackers.
The Titans took an early lead when Callie Petrey-Juarez headed home the cross from Maddie Bennett to put the home team up 1-0 in the 12th minute. The hosts tacked on an insurance goal in the 74th minute when Maddie Bennett put home a bouncing ball after a corner kick.
Minnesota hits the road again this weekend when they travel to Oxford, Mississippi to face SEC powers Arkansas and Ole Miss.
