Minnesota Hits Road for SEC Country

8/27/2019 10:04:00 AM | Soccer

THIS WEEK IN GOPHER SOCCER

The Minnesota soccer team travels to Oxford, Mississippi to face a pair of SEC teams: Arkansas and Ole Miss. First up the Gophers face the Razorbacks at 4:00pm CT on Thursday August 29 before an early morning game at 11:00am CT the following Sunday.

The Gophers match with Ole Miss will be streamed live on WatchESPN.

SERIES HISTORY

The Gophers have never faced the Razorbacks of Arkansas while the Maroon and Gold have met with Ole Miss three previous times. This is the second time the Gophers have faced a team for the first time in program history this season after facing Cal State Fullerton on August 25.

Last season midfielder Megan Gray knocked in the game-winning goal to defeat the Rebels 2-1 in extra time at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for the Gophers to take a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.

PREVIOUSLY THIS SEASON

The Gophers had only one 2019 preseason match, a 3-0 victory over North Dakota State University on August 17 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota. Freshman Katie Duong led the way with two goals in her first half of wearing the Maroon and Gold. Duong scored one off a missed penalty kick before burying home a cross from sophomore Patricia Ward in the 18th minute.

The Gophers officially opened the season with a 2-2 draw in Santa Barbara, California, against UCSB at Harder Stadium. After traveling south along the Pacific Coast the Maroon and Gold fell the following Sunday to Cal State Fullerton by a score of 2-0.

MINNESOTA MAKENZIE

Saint Michael, Minnesota native Makenzie Langdok has been the most productive offensive Gopher this season with two goals on four shots in the young season. Langdok, a graduate of St. Michael-Albertville High School, scored both of the goals for the Maroon and Gold in the season opening draw in Santa Barbara, California and tacked on a shot in the team's loss to Cal State Fullerton the following Sunday.

Entering the new week of matches, Langdok has two career assists to go with five career goals including a game-winner against  North Dakota State on Sept. 7, 2018.

SEC COUNTRY

Last season the Gophers found success over SEC teams with victories over both Ole Miss and Auburn. Minnesota outscored their opponents 4-1 in those two matches. While the match against Ole Miss came in the regular season at home, the Gophers defeated Auburn on the road for the first postseason road victory in program history.

The last time the program lost to an SEC program came on Sept. 7, 2014 to Auburn.
