Whalen Leads Gopher Trio at Aurora Games
8/19/2019 1:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's basketball program will be well represented at the inaugural Aurora Games this week in Albany, N.Y. as head coach Lindsay Whalen, assistant coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis and former Gopher Kenisha Bell are all scheduled to participate.
Whalen has been selected as head basketball coach of the Americas Team, while Thibault-DuDonis will be her assistant and Bell will be on the roster. The Americas Team will take on the World Team Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT at the Times Union Center and the game is scheduled to be aired on ESPNU.
According to the official website, the Aurora Games is a multi-sport, multi-country, multi-day event with the goal of showcasing the best in women's sports, entertainment and culture. In addition to the athletic events, it's also intended to be a convergence of athletes, entertainers, media, corporate executives and cultural figures – creating a new and dynamic platform for sports, competition and the exchange of ideas.
The Aurora Games says that its mission is to "invite the women of the world to meet every two years to celebrate their accomplishments and bold visions for the future set against a backdrop of world-class sports competition and entertainment."
Last season was Whalen's first as head coach at her alma mater; Minnesota went 21-11 overall (9-9 in Big Ten play) and reached the second round of the Women's NIT in Whalen's debut campaign. The team began the season by winning its first 12 games, tying for the second best undefeated start in program history and the third longest winning streak overall in team annals.
Three Gophers took home conference honors as Bell was a consensus All-Big Ten First Team selection and was placed on the All-Big Ten Defensive Team, while Destiny Pitts earned First Team honors from the media (second team by coaches) and Taiye Bello was given honorable mention accolades.
Bell was a two-time AP honorable mention All-American during her Gophers career and was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and All-Big Ten Defensive Team in each of the last two seasons. She led the Gophers by averaging 19.1 points and 4.4 assists per game last year and also averaged 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 steals per contest.
She finished her career ranked third at Minnesota in free throws made (508) and attempted (693), fifth in scoring average (18.5) and games in double figures (86), sixth in assists (411), seventh in field goals attempted (1,492), eighth in points scored (1,754) and steals (215), and ninth in field goals made (596).
