MINNEAPOLIS – Gopher Hockey head coach Bob Motzko has announced that Jack LaFontaine has been added to the roster for the 2019-20 season after signing with the University of Minnesota.
The British Columbia Hockey League's top goaltender for the 2018-19 season and a finalist for top goaltender in the Canadian Junior Hockey League, LaFontaine will be immediately eligible to play for the Maroon & Gold while the netminder will have two years of eligibility remaining.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, LaFontaine spent last season with the Penticton Vees in the BCHL where the goaltender posted 30 wins, a .923 save percentage and a 2.19 GAA – all three statistics ranked second in the league during the regular season. He also helped Penticton to its eighth-straight BCHL Interior Division pennant while earning BCHL First Team All-Star honors.
Prior to joining the Vees, LaFontaine spent two seasons at Michigan appearing in 22 games and helping the Wolverines reach the 2018 NCAA Frozen Four in St. Paul. The goaltender previously skated for the Janesville Jets in the North American Hockey League and the Georgetown Raiders in the Ontario Junior Hockey League. With the Jets, LaFontaine was named the 2016 NAHL Midwest Division Goalie of the Year.
The Carolina Hurricanes selected LaFontaine in the third round (75th overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
