MINNEAPOLIS -- The 38th season of Big Ten competition for the Minnesota women's basketball team starts on the road at Penn State on Dec. 28 and wraps up at home against Maryland on March 1, the Big Ten Conference announced Friday. In all, the Gophers will play 18 league games with nine at Williams Arena and nine on the road.
The team's non-conference schedule, as well as tipoff times and TV/online coverage, will be announced at later dates. Fans can guarantee their seats to all of the team's home games by purchasing season tickets on GopherSports.com.
Minnesota opens the conference slate against Penn State for the third time in program history on Dec. 28 in University Park, Pa., then returns home to host Ohio State in the Big Ten home opener on Dec. 31.
The Golden Gophers alternate home and away games during the month of January, beginning with a trip to Nebraska on Jan. 4 and a home date with Northwestern on Jan. 9. After a visit to Illinois on Jan. 12, Minnesota faces off against last year's Big Ten Tournament winner Iowa at Williams Arena on Jan. 16.
A trip to Purdue on Jan. 19 precedes the first of two Border Battle games as the Gophers welcome Wisconsin to town on Jan. 22. The month then wraps up with a contest at Indiana on Jan. 27 and a rematch versus Nebraska on Jan. 30.
Minnesota stays at Williams Arena for its lone matchup of the year against Rutgers on Feb. 2 and concludes the Border Battle at Wisconsin on Feb. 6. After returning home to face Michigan on Feb. 6, the Gophers go on the road for consecutive games at Ohio State (Feb. 13) and Michigan State (Feb. 17).
Two of the final three games take place in Minneapolis beginning with a visit from Indiana on Feb. 22. Then, after the road finale at Iowa on Feb. 27, last year's regular season champion Maryland closes out the schedule on March 1.
The Big Ten Tournament is scheduled to be held in Indianapolis, Ind., March 4-8 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Last season, the Gophers went 9-9 in conference play to finish at .500 or better in the Big Ten for the fifth time in the last six seasons and 17th time in team history.
