Pat Smith Takes Home Fourth Pan American Gold Medal

Pat Smith (77kg) took home his fourth Pan American Games gold medal on Wednesday in Lima, Peru, when he defeated Wuilexis Rivas of Venezuela in the championship bout.
Smith had previously won Greco-Roman gold medals at the games in 2015, 2016, and 2017 now adding a 2019 gold medal at a higher weight class.
Rivas was a 2015 champion at the games while his other opponents had also previously won medals at the games. Smith edged Rivas by 3-2 decision after scoring all three of his points in the final period.
Smith's day began with a 4-1 decision victory over Colombia's Jair Cuero Munoz before he defeated Emmanuel Benitez Castro (Mexico) 5-1 in the semifinal round.
Smith is set to represent USA Wrestling at the 2019 UWW World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan in September.
