Gophers on the Road, This Time for Big Ten/Pac 12 Challenge

GOPHERS BACK ON THE ROAD
The University of Minnesota will face its third and fourth consecutive top 10 opponent this weekend when it travels to University Park, Pa., to compete in the Big Ten/Pac 12 Challenge, hosted by Penn State. The Golden Gophers and Penn State will take on No. 10 Oregon and No. 1 Stanford Friday and Saturday nights. Match time Friday against the Ducks is slated for 5 p.m. CT, while Saturday's contest between the Gophers and Cardinal is at 4:30 p.m., CT.

ABOUT OREGON
No. 10 Oregon is 2-1 this season with 3-0 wins against UC Irvine and Boston College, and a recent 3-1 loss to Pitt Wednesday. Willow Johnson leads the team with 39 kills, followed by Ronika Stone with 36. Kylie Robinson has 113 assists as their starting setter and leads the team with five aces. Libero Brooke Nuneviller has 32 digs. As a team, the Ducks are hitting .285, average 2.40 blocks per set and 14.6 digs per set.
ABOUT STANFORD
Defending NCAA champion Stanford started its season with a 4-0 record. The No. 1 ranked team defeated No. 3 Texas in five sets and swept No. 7 Florida in three sets last week. Stanford has 14 returning players from last year's team, including Kathryn Plummer who leads the team with 83 kills, averaging 5.93 kills per set. Holly Campbell and Madeleine Gates average 1.15 and 1.14 blocks per set, respectively. Morgan Hentz offers up 61 digs, and Jenna Gray has 163 assists. As a team, Stanford is hitting .356 and averaging 14.7 kills per set.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Minnesota is 2-4 all-time against the Oregon Ducks. It marks the third time the Gophers and Ducks will face each other in the past two seasons. The Gophers are looking for their first win over Stanford as they are 0-9 all-time against the Cardinal.
ON THE DOCKET
Minnesota is back at home Sept. 19-21 when it hosts the annual Diet Coke Classic. Oral Roberts and Clemson comes to town to round out the tournament. Minnesota plays Clemson on Thursday, Sept. 19, followed by Oral Roberts on Sept. 21. Clemson and Oral Roberts will play a neutral match on Sept. 20, which is free and open to the public.
LAST WEEK RECAP
Minnesota went 1-1 in the second week of the 2019 season when it split action against top-10 teams. The Gophers suffered a three-set loss to Texas (22-25, 27-29, 33-35), but bounced back and defeated No. 7 Florida Saturday (25-20, 25-17, 25-22). Stephanie Samedy had 31 kills last week, Minnesota hit .277 as a team and averaged 19.00 digs per set.
MILLER NAMED B1G'S SETTER OF THE WEEK
University of Minnesota senior setter Kylie Miller has been named the Big Ten's Setter of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office. It marks the first conference weekly award of her collegiate career.
Miller had 79 assists and averaged 13.17 assists per set this past week in a win and a loss to No. 7 Florida and No. 3 Texas. She also had three aces and 14 digs. Against the Longhorns last Wednesday, Miller helped the Gophers to a .311 hitting percentage and had two aces. In the win over Florida Saturday, Miller had 36 assists, an ace and a block with seven digs. It was her first home match as a Golden Gopher.
AROUND THE BIG TEN
Only two teams in the Big Ten remain perfect in the first two weeks of the season in Penn State and Nebraska. Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue have suffered one loss, while the rest of the Big Ten has at least two losses heading into third week of play. Stephanie Samedy averages 4.92 kills per set, which ranks second in the Big Ten. Kylie Miller ranks first in the league in assists per set (13.00).

Minnesota is ranked No. 8 in this week's poll, announced Monday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. In all, seven Big Ten Conference teams are ranked in the preseason top 25. Nebraska holds the No. 2 spot, followed by Penn State (4), ,Minnesota (8), Wisconsin (9) Illinois (14), Purdue (23) and Michigan (24).
