Blankenship Leads ‘U’ Alums at The Match

MINSK, Belarus – Ben Blankenship's victory in the men's 3,000 meters closed out the final day of competition for Team USATF at the inaugural The Match as Team Europe secured a 724.5-601.5 victory over the Americans in head-to-head competition. 

One of four University of Minnesota All-American alums competing in the event, Blankenship led the field on Tuesday – picking up nine points for Team USATF – with a winning time of 7:57.48. Hassan Mead added another three points in the event after finishing sixth with a time of 7:59.90. Blankenship opened the competition with a third-place finish (six points) in the men's 1,500 meters on Monday, running 3:39.63. 

Sean Donnelly opened the meet with a seventh-place finish (two points) in the men's hammer throw, clearing 72.82 meters, while Harun Abda came in sixth (three points) in Tuesday's men's 800 meters with a time of 1:47.50. 

The Maroon & Gold contingency contributed a total of 23 points for Team USATF.
