MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Thomas Longbella shot a 65 and is tied for sixth place, while the Minnesota men's golf team is in a tie for 10th after the opening round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Friday at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Longbella came out hot right from the start with four birdies through the first seven holes, and he was 4-under hitting the turn. Bogeys on the 11th and 13th holes cost him two strokes, but he finished even hotter than he started with birdies on each of the final three holes.

The 5-under 65 goes down as the second lowest of Longbella's career, bested only by a 63 he shot in the second round of the Ka'anapali Classic on Nov. 5, 2016. Longbella becomes the fifth Gopher in program history to have multiple rounds of 65 or lower in a career along with teammate Angus Flanagan, who did it last weekend, Rúnar Arnórsson, Bronson La'Cassie and James McLean.

As a team, Minnesota shot a 1-under 279, its best round of the season by three strokes. Arizona State, ranked No. 2 in the Golfweek Coaches Preseason Poll, leads the 15-team field at 18-under with Clemson (-15) and Arizona (-12) trailing.

Individually, Kent State's Josh Gilkison and Illinois' Jerry Ji lead the way after he shot a 7-under 63. Three golfers sit at 6-under, while Longbella is one of four to card a 65.

After competing as an individual at last weekend's Gopher Invitational, freshman Connor Glynn joined the scoring team for the first team and posted an even-par 70 to tied for 42nd. After a double bogey on No. 2, Glynn found himself 2-over through six holes, but he played 3-under golf over the final 12 holes  to match a career low.

Like Glynn, junior Evan Long also played well after an early setback. After opening his round with a triple bogey on the first hole, Long rebounded by playing 1-under over the remaining 17 holes. His 2-over 72 matched a season best and left him in a tie for 57th.

Flanagan matched Long's 72 after going 1-over on both the front and back nine.

Senior Noah Rasinski was one shot back of Long and Flanagan after a 3-over 73 to finish in a tie for 64th. Rasinski had a stretch of three straight birdies between holes 4-6 and finished the front nine at even-par, but he was three over on the back nine.

Also on the trip was freshman Harrison Arnold, who was competing at the Mea Lanakila Individual at the nearby Desert Forest Golf Club. Arnold is tied for 21st after shooting a 4-over 76 and will tee off in Saturday's second round at 10:44 a.m. CT.

Long will be the first Gopher to tee off in round two of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate Saturday when he begins on No. 10 at 9 a.m. CT. Glynn, Longbella, Rasinski and Flanagan will follow in 10-minute intervals.
