MINNEAPOLIS – All five golfers shot under par as the Minnesota men's golf team moved up two spots on the leaderboard to eighth place following Saturday's second round of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Golden Gophers tallied an 11-under 269, their best round as a team since also recording a 269 in the opening round of the Alister Mackenzie Invitational on Oct. 10, 2016, thanks to a 65 from junior Evan Long, a 67 from senior Thomas Longbella, a 68 from freshman Connor Glynn and a 69 from both senior Noah Rasinski and junior Angus Flanagan.

Minnesota is now 12-under through 36 holes, while defending tournament champion Arizona State is in the lead at 28-under-par. Clemson's Turk Pettit leads the individuals at 11-under par, while Kent State's Josh Gilkison is one stroke back and three golfers are 9-under.

Longbella leads the Gophers' contingent at 8-under to tie for sixth place. After a 65 in round one, his 67 in round two gives him a 36-hole score of 132. That's the best in school history for 36 holes, bettering the 133 that Runar Arnorsson established at the 2016 Barona Collegiate Cup.

Long carded a career-best 65 Saturday, marking the third time in the last four rounds that a Gopher reached that total, joining Flanagan, who did it in the second round of last weekend's Gopher Invitational and Longbella, who did it yesterday. Long, who previously had twice shot rounds of 69, was 3-under through the first nine holes. After a birdie on No. 2, he ended his day with birdies on three of his last six holes to move to 3-under for the tournament and into a tie for 27th.

One stroke behind Long is Glynn, who set a career best with his 68 to sit 2-under for the tournament. Even-par through 11 holes, Glynn, who started on No. 10 like the rest of his teammates, tallied birdies on No. 3 and No. 7 to finish in the red and tie for 30th.

Flanagan is tied for 50th at 1-over par following his 69. He was 3-under through his first nine holes, but dropped to even when he followed a bogey with a double bogey on No. 2. However, he played the final seven holes at 1-under.

Rasinski is one shot back of Flanagan and in a tie for 53rd at 2-over after his 69, which matched a season low. Like Flanagan, he too was 3-under through his first nine holes. After dropping back to even par through 15 holes, he birdied No. 16 and finished par-par.

Freshman Harrison Arnold is also in Arizona, competing at the nearby Mea Lanakila Individual. After an opening round 76, Arnold moved up two spots into a tie for 19th thanks to a 1-over 73.

The third and final round will begin for Minnesota on Sunday at 10:40 a.m. CT.
