MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota soccer team dropped a Sunday afternoon matinee to South Dakota State University 1-0 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium in St. Paul.
The Gophers had 59 percent possession throughout the match with six corner kicks and seven free kicks, but weren't able to finish off the attack into the back of the net.
"It's another one of those teams you can't just expect something, you have to actually do it," forward Haley Hartkemeyer said. "I think we expected a lot, we just didn't carry out game plans. We didn't finish the chances that we had."
Prior to the game, the Gophers honored their six seniors, TJ McKendrick, Catherine Billings, Nikki Albrecht, Cachet Lue, Marisa Windingstad, and Haley Hartkemeyer, with all starting the match. The group is two-time Big Ten Tournament champions as well as 2016 regular season conference champions.
The Gophers had one of their best offensive performances with 16 shots, tied for the most they have had this season. With seven shots on goal, including five in the first half, the Maroon and Gold tested Jackrabbit's goalkeeper Maggie Smither repeatedly.
Freshman Katie Duong led the charge with four shots, followed by forward Patricia Ward and defender Nikki Albrecht who each finished with three shots. Duong and Ward had several beautiful shots that veered just off frame.
Goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen did her job in goal with three saves to bring her season total up to 35.
