Gophers Drop Big Ten Opener to No. 13 Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Minnesota soccer program fell 2-0 to No.13 Rutgers on Friday night to begin their 2019 Big Ten slate.
After a strong start to the game, the Scarlet Knights were able to capitalize on a couple of back-to-back opportunities in the first half to distance themselves from early on in the match.
Rutgers' Amirah Ali scored the game's first goal 15 minutes into match when she chipped the ball over Maddie Nielsen. The Scarlet Knights' added another score only five minutes later when Nneka Moneme poked the ball into the Gophers goal.
Despite allowing the pair of scores, Nielsen also made a couple of key saves to keep the game within reach.
Midfielder Katie Duong led the Gophers with two shots, including one on goal. While she only finished with one shot, Duong's fellow freshman Manthy Brady had several great runs into the 18-yard box where she split defenders and narrowly missed the finish.
Junior forward Makenzie Langdok had the Gophers' other shot on goal.
Nikki Albrecht made multiple runs up the right sideline where her crosses create several of the Gophers' best offensive opportunities. While she was making offensive attacks, she was her usual stellar defender on the backline.
As freshmen, Brady, Duong, Paige Elliott, and Linnea Yacovella competed in their first career Big Ten matches. Plus, transfer Katie Koker made her first conference appearance.
The Gophers travel to down the coast to take on Maryland on Sunday afternoon before returning home for a pair of weekend games against Penn State then Ohio State.
