Maroon and Gold Drop Away Match Against Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Minnesota soccer program fell 2-0 to the Maryland Terrapins on the road in College Park, Maryland, to close out their first conference road trip of the season.
The hosting Terps got on the board early in the first half when Mikayla Dayes scored off a free kick service in the seventh minute. Just after the second half began, the Terps tacked on an insurance goal when Alyssa Poarch slipped one into the back of the net.
"Obviously this is a tough way to start conference play. We are giving up too many soft goals and we aren't being dangerous enough in the attack," senior defender, and co-captain, Marisa Windingstad said after the game. "Collectively it needs to be better, but I truly believe we can turn it around. In doing so we need to turn into each other and we can't start pointing fingers."
Picking up the attack in the second half, Minnesota registered 11 shots in the second stanza, including a pair on goal. The squad finished with 17 total shots on the day, the highest total for the 2019 season thus far.
Freshman midfielder Katie Duong led the team with four shots, two of which were on target. Fellow freshman Paige Elliott was second on the shot list with three.
Midfielder Emily Bunnell, a Cottage Grove, Minnesota, native, made her Big Ten debut with over 15 minutes after transferring from Baylor before the season. In the 41st minute, Bunnell headed the ball into the goal but an offside call took the tally off the board.
Both Alana Dressely and Catherine Billings saw more time on the field on Sunday afternoon than they had previously all season. Plus, defender Delaney Stekr made her first official appearance of the season with over 10 minutes towards the end of the game.
Back in the net, goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen made six saves. That brings her season total up over 40.
Returning to action at home on Friday, the Gophers take on Penn State Friday at 6pm for "Rock the Robbie" night before hosting Ohio State on Sunday at 1pm for the Second Annual Kids Fest as well as a soccer equipment drive hosted by the Sanneh Foundation.
