2019 Gopher Invitational To Begin Friday

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team opens up their fall season with the annual Gopher Invitational this weekend at Baseline Tennis Center. The tournament will take place from Sept. 20-Sept. 22. It is free and open to the public.
The Gophers will be hosting seven different teams this year. Teams participating in the tournament include Iowa, Iowa State, Drake, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, Milwaukee, and Green Bay.
"What we're most excited for as coaches is just getting to see the team for the first time this season," said Coach Thompson. "Also getting a chance to see our new freshmen play is what we are looking forward to most and just seeing everyone compete again."
Tournament Format
The tournament will start at 9:00 a.m. each day with two doubles matches and then singles matches to follow. There will be multiple flight draws that are set to be announced Thursday, Sept. 19. Check back to Gopher Sports for the latest bracket.
Scoring will be best-out-of-three, no-ad scoring with a tiebreaker at 6-6.
Participants
Minnesota will have eight players competing in the Gopher Invitational this weekend. The Gophers have six returners and two newcomers competing in the tournament. Tiffany Huber is entering her senior year this weekend. Last spring, she went 17-11 overall with a 14-9 dual record, with the most wins for the Gophers (17).
"This weekend I'm most excited about being able to compete again," says Huber. "My goal is to win the bracket that I'm in and as a team, we want to go undefeated."
Newcomers Ekin Ercetin and Lucia de Santa Ana will be making their debut for Minnesota at the Gopher Invitational.
