The University of Minnesota Women's rowing team has announced their captains for the upcoming season. The program will be led by redshirt senior Kat Hetico and senior Allie Schmidt.
"I'm so grateful for the captains' support during this transition," head coach Alicea Strodel said. "I feel like they are buying in and being good leaders for the team. As a lot of changes are being made here, their energy and feedback has been great. I am really excited for them to lead this team throughout the season."
Hetico, a native of Madison, Wis. is a two-year letterwinner for the Gophers. She is also a three-time Academic Big Ten selection and is majoring in geo-engineering.
As a redshirt junior, Hetico and her team earned a first-place finish at the Cardinal Invite with a time of 6:17.921 and posted a season-best time of 6:10.78 at the Clemson Invite, both in the 2V8. Hetico competed in the Big Ten Championships in the 2V8 as a redshirt junior and in the 1V4 as a redshirt sophomore.
"It was a big honor to be named a captain," said Hetico. "This team has meant a lot to me over the last four years and this is an amazing opportunity to continue to make this the same great experience for everybody else. Having the opportunity to build this team up and create it into the family we want it to be is really exciting."
Schmidt, a native of Maple Grove, Minn., is also a two-year letterwinner for the rowing team. She is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was a CRCA Scholar Athlete Award recipient as a sophomore. The senior is majoring in economics.
As a Junior, Schmidt competed in the 1V4 at the Doc Hosea Invitational where they finished first. She finished second at the North Star Regatta in the Collegiate 4+ and first in the Women's 8+. Schmidt competed in the Women's Collegiate 4+ at the Head of the Mississippi where the boat earned a second place finish. During her Sophomore season, Schmidt helped the 1V4 squad to a season-best time of 6:59.088 at the Cardinal Invite. She was also a part of the 2V4 team that competed at the Big Ten Championships in 2018.
"Being named a team captain was a huge honor. To me, being a team captain means promoting team unity," said Schmidt. "Every girl on this team is such a hard worker and we are all a family, so it makes my job pretty easy."
