Gophers Set to Begin B1G Season

GOPHERS OPEN BIG TEN PLAYÂ Â Â Â Â Â
The University of Minnesota begins Big Ten action this weekend when Indiana and No. 15 Purdue comes to town, Sept. 27-28. The  reigning Big Ten champions open the conference season at home for the fourth-straight season.Â

The Minnesota/Indiana Friday match will be available on BTN +. The Gophers/Purdue match can be seen on Big Ten Network. Fans can watch the BTN broadcast on the linear station as well as through the FOX app on mobile or tablet. A game day live page will also be available on gophersports.com.Â
ABOUT INDIANAÂ Â Â
Indiana enters the Minnesota match with an 11-2 record, including a five-set win over ranked Kentucky two weeks ago. Leading the Hoosiers in kills is Breana Edwards. She records 161 kills, averaging 3.35 per set. Deyshia Lofton has 133 kills and 59 blocks, while Jacqui Armer has 50 blocks. Victoria Brisack has 285 assists, followed by Emily Fitzner with 246. Haley Armstrong offers up a team-best 148 digs. Kamryn Malloy and Brisack have 107 and 100 digs, respectively. As a team, the Hoosiers are hitting .240, averaging 13 kills per set, and 1.33 aces per set.
ABOUT PURDUEÂ Â
No. 15 Purdue enters the weekend with an 8-1 record and a six-game win streak. They most notably beat then-ranked No. 22 Louisville and No. 16 Kentucky during nonconference action. The Boilermakers open the 2019 conference season against Wisconsin Friday night. Caitlyn Newton leads the Boilermakers with 138 kills, averaging 3.94 kills per set. She is followed by Grace Cleveland, who has 123 kills and averages 3.51 kills per set. Blake Mohler has contributed 48 blocks and Hayley Bush has 379 assists. Jena Otec offers up a team-best 161 digs and Marissa Hornung has 104. As a team, Purdue is hitting .284 and average 13.49 kills per set.

Minnesota is 57-16 all-time against the Indiana Hoosiers, dating back to 1975. Minnesota faced Indiana twice last season, both home and away, and came away with two wins, 3-0. The last time the Gophers fell to the Hoosiers dates back to 2014 in Bloomington, Ind.Â
   Minnesota is 52-31 against the Purdue Boilermakers, dating back to 1975. Minnesota won its last meeting against Purdue in 2018, 3-0, but fell to Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., in 2017.Â
ON THE DOCKETÂ Â Â
After four-straight home matches, the Gophers are back on the road Oct. 2, when Minnesota travels to Iowa to face the Hawkeyes. Match time is 6 p.m., and televised on Big Ten Network.Â
LAST WEEK's RECAPÂ Â Â
Minnesota closed out the nonconference portion of their schedule last weekend when it won its home tournament, the Diet Coke Classic. Minnesota earned 3-0 wins over both Clemson and Oral Roberts, Sept. 19 and Sept. 21. Regan Pittman and Stephanie Samedy led the offensive charge when they each had 18 kills. Samedy also had 10 blocks during the two wins, while CC McGraw commanded the back court with 31 digs. The Gophers also averaged 14.17 kills per set and all 15 players saw action in the Oral Roberts win.Â
AROUND THE BIG TENÂ Â Â Â Â Â
Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Purdue  enter the conference season with one loss, while the rest of the Big Ten has at least two losses. Stephanie Samedy averages 4.48 kills per set, which ranks second in the Big Ten. Kylie Miller ranks first in the league in assists per set (12.08), while Regan Pittman is ranked third in blocks (1.40 per set). As a team, the Gophers hold a league-best 15.36 kills per set 14.24 assists per set and 18.64 digs per set.Â

Minnesota is ranked No. 7 in this week's poll, announced Monday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. In all, six Big Ten Conference teams are ranked in the preseason top 25. Nebraska holds the No. 3 spot, followed by Penn State (5), Minnesota (7), Wisconsin (13), Purdue (21) and Illinois (20). Michigan and Indiana are receiving votes.Â
