Minnesota picked up a 2-0 win over Colgate in its season-opener at Ridder Arena on Friday night.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Madeline Wethingon and Sarah Potomak scored goals and Alex Gulstene and Sydney Scobee combined for a 14-save shutout as the No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team skated to a 2-0 win over Colgate in the team's season-opener on Friday night at Ridder Arena.
The WCHA Preseason Rookie of the Year and the 2019 Minnesota Ms. Hockey award recipient, Wethington scored Minnesota's first goal of the season, her first collegiate goal, and the eventual game-winner at the 12:07 mark of the first period on an unassisted effort. Potomak, Minnesota's active career-scoring leader, then doubled the lead by tallying her 47th career goal with 1:16 remaining in the middle frame.
Minnesota (1-0-0) outshot the visiting Raiders (1-1-0) by 36-14 for the game, including surrendering just two shots on goal in the third period. Gulstene made six saves in the first period before Scobee closed out the game with eight saves over the final 40 minutes for the Maroon & Gold. Colgate's Liz Auby made 34 saves.

"Great first win of the season," head coach Brad Frost said. "I thought our team played really well. We were battling a couple injuries and still found a way. We defended really well, I thought. That first one was big as we were controlling the play, and getting the first goal is a way to do that. Colgate is a very good team, very dangerous on the attack. I thought overall we handled it pretty well. Looking forward to another great game tomorrow."
Notable
The Gophers raised the program's 2018-19 WCHA regular-season championship banner prior to Friday's puck drop. Minnesota won the program's 10th WCHA regular-season title and took home the inaugural Julianne Bye Cup last season.
