Gophers Cruise to Series Sweep

9/28/2019 7:02:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota won 8-1 over Colgate to wrap up a non-conference series sweep on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS --Ā Taylor Heise, Olivia Knowles, and Grace Zumwinkle all scored twice as Minnesota cruised to an 8-1 win over visiting Colgate at Ridder Arena on Saturday evening. With the win, the Gophers secured a season-opening non-conference sweep following a 2-0 win in game one on Friday.Ā

Along with two-goal efforts from Heise, Knowles, and Zumwinkle, Minnesota (2-0-0) received goals from Emily Brown and Sarah Potomak. Heise led all players with four points while Zumwinkle (2g-1a) and S. PotomakĀ (1g-2a) each logged three-point games.Ā

The Gophers scored eight-consecutive goals and had a 41-18 advantage in shots on goal; Sydney Scobee finished with 17 saves on 18 shots faced after the Raiders (1-2-0) spoiled Minnesota's shutout with a goal byĀ Malia ScheiderĀ with just 2:44 remaining. Two Colgate goaltenders split time as Alexa Dobchuk made 27 saves on 34 shots faced while Liz Auby had six stops on seven attempts.

Notable

Three of Minnesota's five defense who played this weekend scored their first goals of the season as Knowles and Brown found the back of the net on Saturday after Madeline Wethington scored her first career goal as a Gopher in Friday's 2-0 win.

Quotable

"It was a really great weekend overall," head coach Brad Frost said. "We played really well on both sides of the puck and had great goaltending. Offensively, we got a lot of shots and were able to put them in the net. I'm really proud of our team and loved the way we started the year. We're looking forward to this weekend coming up with Mankato, after they also got a big sweep. They're playing really well and their program continues to be on the rise. We're looking forward to getting down there and playing a nice two game set there."

Up Next: Minnesota at Minnesota State

The Gophers open their WCHA slate by traveling to Mankato, Minn., for a Friday-Saturday series with the Mavericks next weekend. Puck drop between Minnesota and Minnesota State is set for 7:07 p.m. CT Friday and 2:07 p.m. CT Saturday.
