Gophers Earn Road Win over Mavericks

The Gophers and Mavericks meet in game two of this weekend's series at 2:07 p.m. CT Saturday.

MANKATO, Minn. -- Taylor HeiseĀ and Grace Zumwinkle each scored twice and Sydney Scobee earned a 16-save shutout as the No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team opened WCHA play with 6-0 win over Minnesota State on the road onĀ Friday night.

Minnesota (3-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) held a 2-0 lead after the first period as Crystalyn Hengler put the Gophers on the board in the opening six minutes before ZumwinkleĀ doubled the lead with a power-play goal midway through the first period. HeiseĀ added an unassisted goal in the second period before the team erupted for three goals in the third period, including one from Alex Woken beforeĀ ZumwinkleĀ and Heise netted their second of the game.Ā 

The Gophers had a 34-16 advantage in shots on goal, and Minnesota State (2-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) was led by goaltender Abigail Levy's 28-save effort.Ā

"The team played a really solid game here tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "Defensively we were very sound, and our power play was really good. We were really disciplined overall, staying out of the box and continuing to apply the pressure. We're happy with the win, happy with the three points. It was a great way to start off our WCHA season, and we're looking forward to another good one tomorrow."

Minnesota has allowed just one goal in three games so far this season, outscoring opponents, 16-1.
