Minnesota closed out a sweep over Minnesota State to open WCHA play on Saturday afternoon.
MANKATO, Minn. -- The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team closed out a road sweep with a 7-1 win over Minnesota State on Saturday. Alex Woken and Catie Skaja each scored twice for the Maroon & Gold in the win.
Minnesota (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) scored two goals in each of the first two periods before the Mavericks got on the board in the opening five minutes of the third stanza. However, the Gophers responded with three more goals in the third to cruise to the 7-1 win after winning 6-0 on Friday.
The Gophers received points from 11 different players in the 7-1 victory led by Woken's three-point effort (2g-1a). Skaja (2g), Emily Brown (1g-1a), Taylor Heise (1g-1a), Grace Zumwinkle (2a), and Amy Potomak (2a) each logged multiple points for the Maroon & Gold as well. Sydney Scobee had 19 saves over the first two periods before Makayla Pahl made 12 saves on 13 shots faced in the third period.
Minnesota State (2-2-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) got its lone goal from Charlotte Akervik, spoiling the shutout early in the third period. Calla Frank made 32 saves in net for the Mavericks, and the Gophers had a 39-32 advantage in shots on goal.
Quotable
"Another solid effort from our team tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "Everybody's contributing and it's been a whole lot of fun see our team play a full 60 minutes. Great six points on the road against a very good team, and it's going to be fun getting on the road out to Pittsburgh and Robert Morris here in a few days, but we're going to enjoy this one. I'm really proud of our team."
Notable
With this weekend's sweep, the Gophers improved to 90-3-3 all-time against the Mavericks, including extending their current winning streak over Minnesota State to 45-consecutive games -- a streak that dates back to a 4-2 win on Jan. 29, 2010.
