MINNEAPOLIS ā The Minnesota men's golf team dominated on the opening day of the Macdonald Cup in New Haven, Conn., as the Gophers hold a large lead in the team standings, and juniors Angus Flanagan and Evan Long are each tied for the individual lead after 36 holes Saturday at The Course at Yale.
After a 6-under 274 in the opening round, the Golden Gophers followed with a 5-under 275 in round two to put themselves 11-under for the tournament. That gives Minnesota a 19-shot lead heading into Sunday's final round as Princeton and host-Yale are tied for second at 8-over-par.
Minnesota is seeking its first team tournament win since capturing the 2014 Big Ten Championship.
Each team had six golfers compete with the top four rounds counting toward the team score. Minnesota's stellar Saturday was highlighted by not only having its top four golfers all finish in the top 10, but having four of the eight golfers in the tournament that are at even-par or better.
Flanagan and Long lead the way at 4-under as each have a score of 136 through 36 holes.
An opening-round 67 for Flanagan was followed by a second-round 69. He had four birdies in each round. Long reversed those scores as he went 69-67 Saturday. He had eight birdies on the day, including five alone in the second round.
Freshman Connor Glynn is three shots back of Flanagan and Long and is tied for fifth place at 1-under 139. He now has five straight rounds of even-par or better as he shot a 69 in round one and 70 in round two. Glynn had three birdies in each round and an eagle on the par-four seventh hole in the second round.
One shot back of Glynn is senior Thomas Longbella, who is at even par and tied for seventh place. Longbella shot a 1-over 71 in the first round, but bounced back with a 1-under 69 in round two that included back-to-back birdies on the front nine.
Fellow senior Noah Rasinski is in a five-way tie for 27th place after a 6-over score of 146 through 36 holes. He posted a 1-under in the opening round, but followed with a 7-over 77 in round two.
Freshman Harrison Arnold rounds out the Gophers' squad. He is tied for 41st at 9-over following a 73 in round one and 76 in round two.
Minnesota will begin action in Sunday's final round beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
