The Gophers officially kick off the 2019 cross country campaign by hosting the Oz Memorial this Friday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers officially kick off the 2019 cross country campaign by hosting the Oz Memorial this Friday. The meet begins with a four-mile men's race at 6:30 p.m. CT followed by the women's 6K race at 7 p.m. at Les Bolstad Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.

In the Rankings
The University of Minnesota enters the 2019 cross country season with the women's team ranked No. 25 in the nation and the men's team receiving votes in the preseason edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) National Coaches' Poll.

Who's Back?
The Maroon & Gold women return five of the team's top seven runners from a year ago led by Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz. Also back for the Maroon & Gold are Abby Kohut-Jackson, Anastasia Korzenowski, and Jaycie Thomsen, along with 2018 NCAA alternates Olivia Hummel and Zetta Mason. A year ago, the Minnesota woman took third at the NCAA Midwest Regional and came in sixth at the Big Ten Championships.

Led by returning all-region honorees Alec Basten and Evan Ferlic, the men return six of their seven runners from the 2018 NCAA Midwest Regional squad in Basten, Ferlic, Jack Manderscheid, Robert Wagner, Owen Hoeft, and Shane Streich, along with B1G runners Nick Rink, Connor Olson, and Seth Eliason. The Gopher men placed fifth at the 2018 NCAA Midwest Regional and came in seventh at last year's B1G Championships. 

2018 Oz Memorial Women's Rewind
Led by Megan Hasz's individual title, the Gopher women took home top team honors with a perfect 15 points at the 2018 Oz Memorial. Hasz clocked a season-opening 6K time of 21:43.2 for the win, followed by runner-up Patty O'Brien in 22:32.5 and Anastasia Korzenowski in third (22:34.7). Molly Eastman and Elyse Prescott rounded out the scoring finishes for Minnesota in fourth place and fifth place, respectively, followed by Zetta Mason, Jaycie Thomsen, and Olivia Hummel as the Gophers took the top eight overall places. In total, Minnesota had 14 of the top 15 and 18 of the top 20 finishers.

2018 Oz Memorial Men's Rewind
The Gopher men totaled 24 points and saw all five scorers finish in the top-10 on their way to winning the 2018 Oz Memorial team title. Owen Hoeft led the way with a runner-up finish, followed by Joey Duerr in third at 20:18.6 and Jack Manderscheid in fourth at 20:18.9. Connor Olson and Alex Plasencia rounded out the team scoring for the Maroon & Gold with top-10 finishes as Olson came in sixth at 20:33.0 and Plasencia finished ninth at 20:51.9.

The Gophers return to action by hosting the Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Course on Saturday, Sept. 28. The 34th annual Griak includes four collegiate races and four high school races and begins with the Merrill Fischbein Men's Gold Division I race at 9:30 a.m. CT followed by the Jack Johnson Women's Gold Division I race at 10:20 a.m.
