Gophers Drop Home Opener to Marquette

MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher soccer program dropped their home opener to Marquette 1-0 on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
Despite leading the Golden Eagles in shots 13 to four, including a nine to two ration in the first half, the Golden Eagles were able to put the ball in the back of the net with their limited opportunities. With the 42nd minute mark approaching Josie Kelderman hit the upper corner to give the visitors the lead.
"This is a tough game because our possession was so great," senior defender Nikki Albrecht said. "We can execute and finish in the moments where we need to capitalize."
The Gophers had 58 percent possession on the night.
Albrecht led the Gophers with three shots, including two on goal, while forward Patricia Ward hit the frame with both of her attempts.
Marquette's goalkeeper Maddy Henry stifled the Minnesota attack and made nine saves on the evening in order to pitch the shutout.
Now, the Gophers prepare to take on No.5 Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, before returning home next week.
Despite the loss in front of the home crowd, head coach Stef Golan isn't discouraged.
"We're still sorting some things out," Golan said. "We're still trying to find ourselves. Once we do that I'm excited."
