Minnesota has its first two road meets of 2020 this weekend as the team splits up to compete at Iowa and St. Thomas.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track & field program has its first two road meets of 2020 this weekend as the team splits up to compete at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa on Friday and Saturday and the St. Thomas Opener in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday.
About the 2020 Larry Wieczorek Invitational
Iowa is hosting the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa. Action at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational gets underway with men's weight throw at 10 a.m. CT Friday; running events begin at 5:15 p.m. CT. Competition resumes at 12 p.m. CT Saturday with women's pole vault before running events kick off at 1:30 p.m. CT. The Gophers will face competition from Arizona, Baylor, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Purdue, and Wisconsin. Admission to the meet is free.
About the 2020 St. Thomas Opener
The 2020 St. Thomas Open is set for Friday afternoon at UST's Anderson Fieldhouse.
2019 Larry Wieczorek Invitational Rewind
Minnesota wrapped up the Larry Wieczorek Invitational with five event titles: Amira Young (unseeded 200m), Bethany Hasz (3,000m), Kiley Sabin (shot put), Jonathan Tharaldsen (shot put), and Jordan MacIntosh (unseeded mile). Unattached athletes Kaitlyn Long (weight throw) and Shane Streich (800m) also won their respective events. The Minnesota women were second to Baylor (91 points) in the team standings, scoring 85.50 points, while the men placed third with 72 points behind host Iowa (87 points) and Missouri (79).

Minnesota kicked off its 2020 home schedule by combining to win 20 event titles and setting four meet records at the Minnesota Open last weekend. Competing at the recently renovated University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on campus, the Gophers split the win total evenly with the men and women each claiming 10 titles. Complete Recap

On the men's side, Alec Basten, Kieran McKeag, Jackson Wellenstein, Teddy Frid, and Jonathan Tharaldsen will lead the squad in 2020 while Rachel Schow, Ayesha Champagnie, Erin Huls, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Ryan Crotty, and Val Larson will serve as captains on the women's side.
2019 Track & Field Season Rewind
The Gophers wrapped up the 2019 track & field season with six All-Americans at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships led by two First Team All-Americans in Obsa Ali (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw). Second Team All-America nods went to Alec Basten (3,000-meter steeplechase), Bethany Hasz (5,000-meter run), Tess Keyzers (shot put), and Kieran McKeag (hammer throw). The Minnesota women finished fifth at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Outdoor Championships while the men came in eighth in the team standings.
Preseason National Rankings
The Gopher women open the season ranked No. 7 in the nation according to the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Rating Index while Minnesota comes in 30th in the men's indoor track & field national rating index. Seventeen Gophers are nationally ranked in individual events to kick off the season as well.
Indoor Records Fall
The Gopher women have already set all-time top-10 marks in six events this season, led by Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz both breaking Minnesota's previous program record in the 5,000-meter run. Meanwhile, the Gopher men have set all-time top-10 marks in four events this season.

Next weekend, the Gophers are set to compete at the UW-Stout Open in Menomonie, Wis., on Saturday, Jan. 25.
