Strong Showing for Divers on Day One of Competition

MINNEAPOLIS - After the first day of competition at the Bruin Diving Invitational, the Gophers are already making their presence known as five of Minnesota's competitors qualified for finals today in Los Angeles.

Joy Zhu and Jake Butler led the way in this strong showing for the Gophers, finishing second (591.60) in the women's 1-meter springboard and seventh (657.70) in the men's 3-meter springboard, respectively.

Although taking home silver out of a field of 55 divers is an incredible accomplishment, it does mark the first time in Zhu's last seven springboard performances that she did not claim the top overall spot. In her previous six appearances in the 1-meter and 3-meter, Zhu claimed gold on all six occasions.

Freshmen Jaclynn Fowler and Hannah Craley competed alongside Zhu, with the former earning a place in the finals as well. Fowler ultimately placed seventh (551.35) overall.

In company with Butler were juniors Maxim Royzen and Duncan Lester, who both qualified for the 3-meter finals. Royzen earned a ninth place finish (636.90), while Lester placed 14th (585.85).

Tomorrow marks day two of the Invitational, where the men will compete in platform diving, while the women are set for the 3-meter springboard. Prelims start at 12:30 CST for both events, with finals to follow immediately thereafter.
