Second-Half Spurt Leads to Gophers' Win at Purdue

1/19/2020 4:10:00 PM | Women's Basketball

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Minnesota (12-6, 2-5 Big Ten) used a huge second-half spurt to knock off Purdue (12-7, 3-4) Sunday, 72-59, and end a five-game losing streak.

Tied at 43-43 with 3:52 left in the third quarter, the Golden Gophers embarked on a 19-0 run over the next 5:49 to record its third straight win at Mackey Arena, a first in program history. Freshmen Jasmine Powell and Sara Scalia each scored six points during the stretch, while junior Gadiva Hubbard added five and freshman Barbora Tomancova scored two.

Purdue had just come back from a 41-33 deficit to even the game at 43-43 before Powell scored on a layup and Scalia added a layup and free throw of her own. A basket in the paint from Hubbard was sandwiched by two more field goals from Powell to end the third quarter with 11 straight points for Minnesota.

The Gophers kept up their momentum in the fourth quarter as Hubbard opened the final stanza with her third 3-pointer, while Tomancova's layup was followed by another 3-pointer from Scalia which pushed the lead to 62-43 with 8:32 remaining. Purdue would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way as Minnesota improved to 5-2 on the road this year.

During Minnesota's 19-0 run, Purdue was 0-for-8 from the floor and turned the ball over four times.

Five Gophers scored in double figures with Scalia leading the way with 18 points for the second straight contest. She hit three 3-pointers and added three rebounds and three assists.

Hubbard was right behind her with 17, her fifth straight game in double figures and her team-leading 13th such game of the year. Like Scalia, Hubbard also had three 3-pointers in addition to four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Senior Jasmine Brunson kept up her stellar play with 13 points, her third straight game with at least that many points. Brunson had five steals to set a career high and lead a defensive effort that forced Purdue into 20 turnovers, the most for the Gophers in a Big Ten game this year.

Fellow senior Taiye Bello notched her team-leading eight double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also tied a career high with three assists and registered a block to tie Jessie Edwards (113) for seventh in program history.

Powell was the fifth Gophers to reach double figures as she had 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Minnesota returns to Williams Arena Wednesday to host Wisconsin at 7 p.m. on BTN Plus.
