MISSOULA, Mont. - The University of Minnesota women's tennis team fell short 4-3 to the University of Utah in a neutral site match at PEAK Racquet Club in Missoula, Mont. This dual drops the Gophers record to 1-1 on the 2020 season.
DOUBLES
The courts were not in favor of the Maroon and Gold during doubles play. Despite a valiant effort, all three duos could not overcome the Utes. The Gophers went into singles play down by a point.
SINGLES
Snagging the first point for the Gophers, Cammy Frei downed Katya Hersh 6-0, 7-6 (7). Finishing behind, both Tina Kreinis and Tiffany Huber were edged out in two straight-sets. Dalila Said defeated her opponent and earned another point; the newcomer advanced her record to 3-1 on the season. Tying it up for Minnesota, Ekin Ercetin earned a point over Emily Dush 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. It wouldn't be enough as the winning point came down to the wire and junior River Hart fell in the last match of the day 3-6, 7-6(3), 1-6.
NOTABLE
Dalila Said, Ekin Ercetin, and Cammy Frei all went undefeated in singles on the weekend. Their singles record improves to 2-0 overall.
QUOTABLE
"Today was a battle and unfortunately we came up just short against a good Utah team," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "The doubles point was huge today, so we need to do some work when we get home and focus on cleaning up some things as we prepare for our Kick-off matches next weekend. There is a lot more tennis to play this season and we need to learn and grow and prepare for next week. We have a resilient group of girls and they will be ready to go for our upcoming matches."
UP NEXT
The Golden Gophers will pick play back up next weekend in Los Angeles, Calif., at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Minnesota will compete against No.4 UCLA and Loyola Marymount or Gonzaga.
