Bowl Records Fall in Outback Bowl Victory

Tyler Johnson, Tanner Morgan and Mohamed Ibrahim shine under Florida sun
The No. 16 Minnesota Golden Gophers beat the No. 9 Auburn Tigers 31-24 to win the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020, in Tampa, Fla.
The win was Minnesota's 11th victory of the season, which is something the Gophers last accomplished in 1904. Coupled with Minnesota's victory against No. 5 Penn State earlier this year, the Gophers beat two teams ranked in the AP Top 10 for the first time in a season since 1956 (beat No. 3 Michigan State and No. 5 Michigan).
The Gophers set some significant bowl records in the historic win as well, led by outgoing senior and unofficial King of the North Tyler Johnson.
Johnson set career highs in catches (12) and receiving yards (204) against Auburn and also scored two touchdowns that will not soon be forgotten. The first was a one-handed grab in the back of the end zone where he magically got a foot down in the green and the second was a game-winning 73-yard score in the fourth quarter.
Johnson set school bowl game records with 12 catches, 204 yards and tied his own record with two receiving touchdowns. He also leaves Minnesota with career bowl records for catches (16), receiving yards (261) and receiving touchdowns (4).
Johnson wasn't the only one who shined under the Florida sun on New Year's Day.
Quarterback Tanner Morgan threw for a school bowl game record 278 yards against the Tigers and his 19 completions ranked tied for third in school history.
Running back Mohamed Ibrahim churned out 140 yards, which was the fifth most ever by a Gopher in a bowl game. He rushed for 224 yards against Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl last year and has 364 career bowl game rushing yards is the most in school history.
The Minnesota offense totaled 494 yards, which was the second most in school history in a bowl game and the four touchdowns tied for second most in school history. Minnesota's 23 first downs were the fourth-most in school history in a bowl game.
The Gophers were staunch on defense as they limited the potent Auburn rushing attack to a paltry 56 yards, which is the fourth fewest in school history.
The Gophers have now won a school-record four straight bowl games and have a nation-best 19 straight nonconference wins.
Minnesota opens the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 at TCF Bank Stadium against Florida Atlantic. Season tickets are now on sale.
