Junior captain Shane Wiskus made his season debut over the weekend and came away with a pair of weekly honors.
The Spring Park, Minn. native was named the Big Ten and College Gymnastics Association Gymnast of the Week after posting top three finishes in five events and helping the Gophers to a second place finish at the Windy City Invitational, the organizations announced Tuesday. It is the first weekly award for Minnesota this season and the fourth time in his career that Wiskus has received Big Ten Gymnast of the Week.
"It's great to see Shane start up the season in such a fashion with the performance he gave us this weekend," Gophers head coach Mike Burns said. "He's really getting into his stride and I'm excited about what the rest of the season brings to him and his teammates."
After sitting out the first meet of the season, Shane came back with a bang and claimed the all-around, parallel bars and floor event titles. His all-around score of 83.550 is the highest of any gymnast so far this season and makes him the No. 1 all-arounder in the country.
At his last NCAA meet prior to Saturday, Wiskus earned Minnesota's first national championship since 2014 on parallel bars. He lived up to his title at Windy City, scoring 14.300 for the event title and moving him into the No. 1 rank on the apparatus. He closed out the meet with Minnesota on floor and scored 14.200 to take home the gold.
Wiskus also claimed second place on rings (13.900) and third on pommel horse (13.500).
Shane is a two-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and six-time All-American. Prior to beginning his third season with the Gophers, Wiskus was named to the US Senior National Team, the youngest on the squad and the only active college gymnast. He competed at the World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany in October with Team USA, who finished in fourth.
