Zhu Receives Third B1G Diver of the Week Award
1/22/2020 3:01:00 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore diver Joy Zhu has been named Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week for her performance at the Bruin Diving Invitational this past weekend. This marks Zhu's third Diver of the Week award of the 2019-20 season, as well as the 12th weekly honor garnered by the Gophers.
Over the weekend, Zhu recorded podium finishes in both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events at the Bruin Diving Invitational in Los Angeles. Zhu placed second in the 1-meter (591.60) and third in the 3-meter (628.60) at the invite.
Zhu's double-podium finish is made all the more impressive when taking into account the competition she faced in the diving well. 55 women competed in the 1-meter, while another 49 entrants participated in the 3-meter.
With the Jan. 22 accolade, Zhu has now claimed three separate B1G Diver of the Week awards this season, including three of the last five handed out by the Big Ten. Her third Diver of the Week honor also ties her for the most of any diver in the conference, alongside Emily Bretscher of Purdue and Jayah Matthews of Iowa.
The Wuhan, China native previously took home Diver of the Week honors on Dec. 11 and Jan. 8. of the present campaign.
Zhu will have a chance to add to her impressive total of Big Ten accolades from Jan. 31-Feb. 1 when the Gophers travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for a Big Ten tri-dual against Purdue and Northwestern.
Now with 12 total honors on the season, the Gophers have already out-performed their recognition from both 2016-17 and 2017-18 and look capable of topping last year's total of 15 weekly awards.
Below is a complete list of the Big Ten weekly awards Minnesota swimmers and divers have won this season.
