Jake Bergeland Reflects on Dual Debut
1/22/2020 11:21:00 AM | Wrestling
This past weekend in Michigan, Minnesota native Jakob Bergeland made his dual debut for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in his third year on the roster. A Centennial High School product, Bergeland won his Gophers debut over Alex Hrisopoulos on Friday night in Michigan State's Jenison Field House.
Now 13-6 on the season, Bergeland reflected on the weekend experience he won't forget!
GopherSports: What were your feelings when you knew you'd be getting the dual start?
Bergeland: I was pretty excited. It's always nerveracking because it's the first time I'll be starting a dual, but I was just excited to try to get the win. Just excited to go out there and wrestle for the team.
GS: What's going through your head when you're getting ready to close out the dual?
Bergeland: The other guys did a good job putting the dual out of reach so I just had to go out there and wrestle without any pressure. I was just excited to get out there.
GS: You gave a thumbs up while getting your hand raised, what were your feelings in that moment?
Bergeland: Just relief because I thought I wrestled a good match. It was a good match for my debut win. At that point it was the only match I had gotten so I was relieved to win and wrestle hard like the coaches asked me do. It was for the coaches because I'm just trying to do what they've been telling me. Showing off my improvements I've worked on with people like Coach Becker. And also for the family back home who I knew was watching.
GS: Did you talk on the phone with your parents afterwards?
Bergeland: Mom was pretty pumped and my dad was very excited. They were just very happy that I finally got that first dual won and took advantage of the opportunity.
