Kozicky, Meyer Receive Preseason Honors From Perfect Game
1/23/2020 9:58:00 AM | Baseball
MINNEAPOLIS – Redshirt senior shortstop Jordan Kozicky and junior right-handed pitcher Max Meyer have been named to Perfect Game's Preseason All-Conference team as part of their annual Big Ten Conference preview. Meyer was also tabbed as PG's pick for Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
Â
Although Meyer has already received a trio of preseason All-American honors from PG, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and D1Baseball, this marks Kozicky's first preseason accolade of 2020.
Â
As the lone senior on a strong Minnesota roster, Kozicky boasts some rather impressive career totals at the dish. Through his first three seasons in Maroon and Gold, the Minneapolis native owns a .275/.369/.460 slash with 155 hits, 20 home runs, 38 doubles, 103 runs and 115 RBI.
Â
Entering 2020, Kozicky is on the verge of eclipsing several career milestones, including being just 45 hits away from the magical 200. The senior is also within striking distance of Minnesota's top-10 all-time lists in the following statistics: doubles (11 needed), home runs (seven needed), RBI (48 needed) and hit by pitches (one needed).
Â
Last season, the former Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding player delivered a .237/.320/.485 slash while mashing a team-high 11 home runs and 49 RBI. If he is able to replicate that type of run production during his senior campaign, it will be a historical year for Kozicky and the Gophers.
Â
Meyer joins Kozicky in garnering preseason recognition from PG, having been named a Preseason Second Team All-American by the publication just two weeks prior. In addition to his Preseason All-Conference accolade as a starting pitcher, PG also picked Meyer as their Preseason Big Ten Pitcher of the Year.
Â
Through two campaigns in Gold Country, Meyer has shown capable of dominating both as a reliever and starter. Meyer worked in a relief role as a freshman, finishing 2-3 with a 2.06 ERA and 54 strikeouts across 43 2/3 innings, while tying the program record of 16 saves.
Â
As a starter in 2019, Meyer held steady with a 5-3 record and 2.11 ERA across 76 2/3 innings. Meyer also struck out a team-high 87 batters and slashed .256/.323/.314 at the plate in addition to his work on the mound.
Â
These two players will officially embark on their ensuing seasons when the Gophers open the 2020 campaign at the Angels College Classic on Feb. 14 against Oregon in Tempe, Ariz.
