Game two of the Border Battle series is set for 3:07 p.m. CT Saturday in Madison, Wis.
MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team tied the game with a three-goal third period but fell to top-ranked Wisconsin by a score of 5-4 in overtime in front of a sold-out crowd at LaBahn Arena on Friday night.
After falling behind 4-1 after two periods, Minnesota (20-3-3, 12-3-2-1 WCHA) rallied with a three-goal second period to send the game to overtime as Sarah Potomak cut the deficit to two with her 165th career point before Grace Zumwinkle scored her second of the game and then Amy Potomak tied the score at 4-4 with 5:06 remaining. However, Wisconsin's Sophie Shirley cut the Gophers' comeback short when she scored the game-winner just 52 seconds into overtime.
The Gophers were led by three points each from Zumwinkle (2g-1a) and Taylor Heise (3a) while Wisconsin (22-2-1, 12-2-1-0 WCHA) was led by Abby Roque's hat trick. The Badgers had a 30-25 advantage in shots on goal as Sydney Scobee finished with 25 saves.Â

"I'm really proud of our team," head coach Brad Frost said. "Obviously it hurts to lose this one here tonight in overtime. Down 4-1 in the third period and just the belief that our team had that they could come back - and they proved it, getting it to 4-4 and sending it to OT. Some lessons for us to learn that we're never out of the fight. In the second period, the game got away from us a little bit and Wisconsin scored three quick ones so we need to defend a little better and capture the momentum at times a little better, but overall a good game here tonight. I'm proud of our team and we're looking forward to a great battle tomorrow."
Notable
This season's Border Battle series now sits at 1-1-1Â between the Gophers and Badgers after Minnesota won 4-2 in game one and the teams posted a 2-2 overtime tie in game two in Minneapolis back in November.
