MINNEAPOLIS – The Big Ten Conference has named University of Minnesota redshirt senior Jonathan Tharaldsen as the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Rod McCravy Memorial last Saturday.
A native of Bismarck, N.D., Tharaldsen picked up his third win of the year in the men's shot put at Kentucky's home event, clearing a career record of 20.50 meters (67-03.25 ft.).
The mark currently stands as the best in the NCAA this year while ranking third overall in the United States and eighth overall in the world. Additionally, Tharaldsen continues to climb towards the school record of former Olympian and NCAA champion Ron Backes – the only Gopher with a better performance in the indoor shot put than Tharaldsen at 21.01 meters (68-11.50 ft.) in 1986.
A two-year team captain for Minnesota, Tharaldsen earned Second Team All-America honors last year in the indoor shot put before picking up a Second Team All-Big Ten nod in the outdoor shot put. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and was honored as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar last season.
