Champagnie Leads Gophers at Jack Johnson Classic

The Gophers kicked off this weekend's competition on day one at the Jack Johnson Classic on Friday.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ayesha Champagnie was the top collegiate finisher in the pentathlon and Lexi Kiefer finished as runner-up in women's pole vault as the Golden Gopher track & field team competed on day one at the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on Friday.

Champagnie placed third overall in the pentathlon with a career-best score of 4,091 points, leading four Gophers among the top-eight finishers. Champagnie won the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles in 8.44 seconds and shot put with a mark of 14.14 meters (46-04.75 ft.). With her career-best score, Champagnie improved her mark at third in Minnesota history.

Behind Champagnie, Hannah Arason scored 3,640 points for sixth place, followed by Monique Felix (3,608 points) and Allison Gerads (3,607 points) in seventh and eighth, respectively. 

Kiefer cleared a season-best 3.82 meters (12-06.25 ft.) to finish as runner-up in women's pole vault  to round out the event finals held on Friday.

On the men's side, three Gophers opened up the men's heptathlon competition on Friday night with the first four of seven events. Teddy Frid currently stands in third place with 2,977 points while Ben Ose is right behind his teammate in fourth at 2,947 points. Noah Cvetnic sits in sixth with 2,842 points. The remaining three events in the men's heptathlon are scheduled for Saturday.

Action continues at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday with a full day of competition kicking off at 10:30 a.m. CT with men's weight throw and the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. Admission to the meet is free. General parking is available in the University Ave. Ramp, the Washington Ave. Ramp, Lot 37 off 5th Street SE, and the Maroon Lot on Oak Street SE.
