Potomak Leads Gophers Past Bulldogs

1/31/2020 10:20:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Amy Potomak recorded a career-high four points, including a natural hat trick, against Minnesota Duluth.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Amy Potomak led the way with a four-point game, including a natural hat trick, and Sydney Scobee made 17 saves in her seventh shutout of the season to lead the No. 2 University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 5-0 win over No. 9 Minnesota Duluth at Ridder Arena on Friday night.

Minnesota (21-4-3, 13-4-2-1 WCHA) received multiple points from Alex Woken (1g-2a), Emily Oden (2a), and Olivia Knowles (2a) along with A. Potomak's career-high four-point effort (3g-1a). The Gophers commanded the game from the drop of the puck, outshooting the visitors 18-4 over the opening frame and 50-17 for the game. Minnesota's 50 shots on goal marks the team's highest output of the season.

The Gophers were two-for-six on the power play while holding Minnesota Duluth (12-9-4, 7-7-3-2 WCHA) scoreless on three opportunities with the skater advantage. UMD netminder Maddie Rooney finished with 45 saves to lead the Bulldogs.

Quotable
"Tonight was a really strong performance by our team," head coach Brad Frost said. "To put up 50 shots against a quality team like Duluth is really good, but equally as impressive is us only giving up 17 shots and defending the way we did. We did a nice job on the face-offs, on rushes, on defending the rush; just a lot of nice things. We got power-play goals and killed penalties. Just a really complete 60 minutes. Maybe one of our best games of the year, if not the best. We're happy with the result, and looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow."

Notable
A. Potomak's natural hat trick marked her first collegiate hat trick. The last hat trick by a Gopher was just shy of a year ago when Kelly Pannek scored a natural hat trick in a 6-3 win at Bemidji State on Feb. 22, 2019.

Up Next
The Gophers and Bulldogs wrap up this weekend's series at 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday at Ridder Arena.
