Women Invested in Leadership and Learning Gathers
10/28/2020 3:55:00 PM | Student-Athlete Development
Direct dialogue, accountability and the importance of leading through stress were the discussion topics for the latest Women Invested in Leadership session earlier this week.
W.I.L.L. is a partnership between the University of Minnesota, Schwan's Corporate Giving Foundation, and the Schwan's Company. The mission of the programming is to empower young women through critical job competencies, customized mentoring, and transformational leadership. Student-athletes meet periodically with mentors and alumnae within the local Twin Cities business community to provide professional development.
Gopher student-athletes and their mentors held three Zoom meetings based on their academic class. The sophomores discussed the importance of direct dialogue and its impact on teamwork. They practiced sharing opposing viewpoints, while using effective listening skills, and responding well during difficult conversations.
The juniors discussed the willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one's actions. The senior/graduate students talked about the importance of leading through stress and its impact on teamwork, character, and achievement. They listened to approaches to stress management and built their own stress managing plans.
W.I.L.L. is set to meet one additional time this semester on Nov. 16.
