Minnesota Earns Road Sweep at UMD

The No. 3 Gophers recorded a 2-1 win over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on the road on Saturday afternoon.

DULUTH, Minn. -- Emily Brown and Emily Oden scored goals and Lauren Bench made 31 saves to lead the No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team to a 2-1 win and road sweep over No. 6 Minnesota Duluth at AMSOIL Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Brown and Oden each scored their first goals of the season to lead the Gophers to the game-two victory after Minnesota (3-1-0, 3-1-0 WCHA) recorded a 4-2 win behind four unanswered goals in game one of the series on Friday. Bench's 31-save effort earned her her third win of the season in net for the Gophers while UMD's Emma Soderberg made 30 stops as both teams posted 32 shots on goal in the game.

Brown gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead after the opening period, and Oden capitalized on a four-on-three power play to extend the Gophers' lead in the second period. Minnesota Duluth (2-2-0, 2-2-0 WCHA) got its lone goal from Ashton Bell at the 9:24 mark of the third period, but Oden's tally proved to be the difference-maker.

For the game, the Gophers were one-for-five with the skater advantage while holding UMD scoreless on five power-play opportunities. Oden's goal marked Minnesota's first power-play goal of the season.

Quotable
"Great sweep -- anytime you can win two on the road against a top-six team in the country is a great weekend," head coach Brad Frost said. "We had to battle some different things there in particular down the stretch. UMD made a great push, but we held on. Lauren Bench was tremendous in net, and we had enough blocked shots and clears to close that game out. We're very happy about the sweep and looking forward to getting home and preparing for Wisconsin."

Notable
Nine different Gophers have scored goals and 14 different skaters have at least one point on the year in just four games so far this season.

Up Next
The Gophers return to action at Ridder Arena next week for a Border Battle series with top-ranked Wisconsin, which recorded a series split on the road at No. 4 Ohio State this weekend. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:07 p.m. CT Friday, Dec. 4 and 4:07 p.m. CT Saturday, Dec. 5.
