Minnesota scored four goals in the third period on the way to a 5-1 win on the road.

MANKATO, Minn. -- The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team blew open a one-goal game with three goals in a 1:12 span of the third period to earn a 5-1 win over Minnesota State on the road at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn., on Thursday night.

Minnesota (4-1-0, 4-1-0 WCHA) was led by Abigail Boreen's first-career two-goal game and a pair of assists from Crystalyn Hengler. Olivia Knowles, Grace Zumwinkle, and Taylor Heise also scored for the Maroon & Gold.Ā

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead into the third period on a first-period tally from BoreenĀ before Knowles doubled the Gophers' lead with a power-play goal at the 2:21 mark of the third period.Ā Minnesota State (1-4-0, 1-4-0 WCHA) responded with a goal by Sydney Langseth, but the Gophers cruised to the win with three quick, unanswered goals from Boreen, Zumwinkle, and Heise.Ā

Lauren Bench made a season-high 40 saves for Minnesota while Minnesota State got 23 saves fromĀ LaurenĀ Barbro in net. The Mavericks had the advantage in shots on goal, 41-28, marking the third time the Gophers have been outshot this season.Ā

Quotable
"Slow start here tonight on the road," head coach Brad Frost said. "Mankato played really, really well. Fortunately we were able to put some pucks in the net there in the third period to get a little breathing room. Hopefully we can start a little quicker here tomorrow. But, overall, a win on the road and three points, and we're looking forward to getting at it back home tomorrow."Ā

Notable
  • Zumwinkle scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
  • Boreen's two-goal effort marked a career high, and she now ranks second onĀ the team with three goals this season.
  • Minnesota is 14-for-14Ā on the penalty kill in five games this season.
  • Knowles' third-period power-play goal was the Gophers' first power-play goal of the season.Ā
  • Today's game marked the 100th all-time meeting between the Gophers and Mavericks. Minnesota owns an all-time record of 94-3-3 against Minnesota State.
