Minnesota to Open 100th Season with Eight Games in 2020

MINNEAPOLIS – The 100th season of Gopher Men's Hockey will begin with eight Big Ten games for the Maroon & Gold starting later this month, the conference announced on Thursday afternoon.Â
The Gophers will open the 2020-21 campaign with four home games at 3M Arena at Mariucci in November before closing out the first half with four games on the road in December.
"We had to be patient, but we know we are playing hockey this month and that's great news for our program," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "I'd again like to thank the Big Ten and our leaders here at Minnesota for their diligence in getting us to this point. We're going to be smart and safe in how we proceed, but we are very excited for the puck to drop, and we can't wait to see the rest of the schedule as it gets finalized."Â

"It's great to finally have a date to circle on the calendar after waiting so long to hear about the season," Minnesota junior forward Sammy Walker added. "I don't think any of us have ever had so much anticipation going into a season as we have for this one. We're ready to go."Â
For the start of the 2020-21 season, there will be no ticket sales for Gopher men's hockey home games as Minnesota Department of Health guidelines specify that venues must reduce occupant capacity to no more than 250 (indoor venue) patrons.Â
Big Ten hockey teams will follow the same medical protocols that were developed by the Big Ten Return to Competition Task Force and announced on Sept. 16, 2020, including daily antigen testing, enhanced cardiac screening and an enhanced data-driven approach when making decisions about practice/competition. Arizona State University has agreed to adhere to the same testing protocols as the Big Ten Conference.
Game times and television designations, as well as the remainder of the 2020-21 schedule and further details regarding the 2021 Big Ten Hockey Tournament, will be announced at a later date.
