Freshman Spotlight: Evan Ng

Entering his freshman year here at the University of Minnesota, Chicago-native Evan Ng is looking to make the most of his time with the Maroon & Gold, taking full advantage of the unique experience of being a Division I student-athlete. In his time studying at Lincoln Park High School and competing with with his club team, Lakeshore Academy of Artistic Gymnastics, Ng was able to be a 5-time JE national qualifier, as well as becoming the 2019 Regional Champion for Region 5 in Still Rings, Parallel Bars, All-Around.
GopherSports: When did you start competing in gymnastics and what made you fall in love with it?
Evan Ng: I started competing in gymnastics at the age of 6. When I was around 9 years old, my coach put me in the future stats program competing as a 10 year old and I really enjoyed doing elite gymnastics. Overall competing against the top guys is what made me really love gymnastics.
GS: What is your favorite/most memorable gymnastics moment prior to coming to Minnesota?
EN: My most memorable gymnastics moment was sticking my dismounts on all 6 events at the 2019 Region 5 Men's Championships and winning the regional all-around title.
GS: What is your intended major and why?
EN: My intended major is Kinesiology because physical therapy has helped me as an athlete and I want to help athletes in the future as well. My major could change since I'm finding interests in other majors as well now that I've explored other options while on campus.
GS: What is this year going to mean to you?
EN: Since this is my last year as a gymnast at the U, this year means a lot to me. I want to end my gymnastics career knowing we're doing as much as we can even during these hard times.
GS: How will you use this upcoming year to the best of your ability?
EN: I want to enjoy every experience I get during this upcoming year. I want to use this year to gain experience as a collegiate athlete and use the lessons I learn for the future.
