Gophers Come in Second Against Hawkeyes, Flames
2/1/2020 3:37:00 PM | Men's Gymnastics
The No. 10 Minnesota men's gymnastics team finished in the middle of the pack after the team's first tri-meet of the season against No. 9 Iowa and No. 19 UIC in Iowa City on Saturday.
The Gophers couldn't overcome the host Hawkeyes for the team title and were edged 400.000-397.600, but Minnesota still finished the day with five out of six event titles and eight top three finishes.
Junior captain Shane Wiskus came home with the pommel horse gold and posted a season-high 13.650. It was a very successful day for Minnesota's underclassmen, as sophomores Mike Moran and David Pochinka took first on floor (14.500) and parallel bars (13.850), respectively, and rookies Donte McKinney (14.650) and Crew Bold (14.100) earned the top spots on vault and high bar.
Minnesota also posted a new season best on high bar with a score of 67.400. The Gophers had the advantage over the Hawkeyes and Flames in both bars events.
Notable
Minnesota's dynamic freshman duo of McKinney and Bold not only set new highs for themselves on Saturday, but for the entire team. McKinney's event-winning score of 14.650 on vault was a new career high, team high for the season, and the third-best among all freshmen in the country. He also set a new personal record of 13.250 on high bar, which was good for sixth place. Bold put up Minnesota's best score of the season on high bar with a 14.100, which easily topped his previous high of 12.350. It is the second-best score of any freshman in the nation and the third-best overall. Bold also took bronze on rings with a new high score of 13.300.
Quotable
"I knew it was going to be a little bit of a weaker lineup but it's still a very disappointing loss. We still need increased dependability from the supporting cast," head coach Mike Burns said. "The big moments came in getting five out of six event titles from Moran, Wiskus, McKinney, Pochinka and Bold."
Pommel Horse
The Gophers began the day on pommel horse for the fourth straight week. In one of only two events for him in the meet, Wiskus set a new personal and team season high of 13.650 for the title. Junior Henry Meeker was Minnesota's next best finisher with a score of 12.750 for seventh place, and sophomore Matt Sullivan followed just behind with 12.550 for eighth.
Rings
Minnesota saved its best for last on rings as Bold delivered a score of 13.300 for the third place finish. Juniors Colton Dee and Russell Johnson posted 13.200 to split fourth place, while Meeker added a 13.100 for fifth.
Floor
Moran delivered a career-best performance on floor and tallied a 14.500 to come away with the title. Fellow sophomore Danny Yoon also posted a career high in the event with a 13.550, which barely held him off the podium in fourth place. Dee and freshman Valen Watrous were Minnesota's next-best finishers and scored 12.750 to tie for 11th.
Parallel Bars
Coming off a monster performance on p-bars last weekend, the Gophers began to hit their stride on the day with the event. Minnesota scored a 66.300 to top Iowa and UIC, and Pochinka, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation on the event, led the way with a score of 13.850 for first place. Senior captain Timmy Kutyla came in fourth place with a score of 13.250 and Bold and Moran split sixth with a pair of 13.100s.
High Bar
The Gophers had their best high bar performance of the season to gain some momentum late in the meet. Bold was the highlight with a huge score of 14.100 to win it, while Wiskus followed closely with 13.700 for the silver and his season high. Pochinka rounded out Minnesota's top three scorers and posted a 13.500 to tie for fourth place.
Vault
Minnesota wasn't able to run away with the victory through its vault rotation, but still had some bright spots. McKinney led the way with a huge mark of 14.650 to win the title, the first of his young career. Dee continued his streak of success on the event and posted a career-high 14.350 for third place. He has now placed in the top five on vault in each of Minnesota's four meets. Watrous was the Gophers' next-best finisher and earned a 13.800 for 10th place.
The Road Ahead
The Gophers return home for a dual meet against the University of Washington Huskies on Friday, Feb. 7 at Maturi Pavilion. The meet is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will feature a 10.0 scoring system. It is also Goldy's Kid's Club Day at the Pav, members will receive free admission with a discount for parents, and will get the opportunity to take part in a handstand competition with the team. Single meet tickets are now available through Gopher Sports.
