Gophers Sweep Panthers, Fighting Hawks to Win Home Opener

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team opened the home season with a pair of sweeps against the University of Northern Iowa and the University of North Dakota, today at Baseline Tennis Center. The Gophers swept both teams, 7-0 to improve to 4-2 this season.

MATCH 1: MINNESOTA vs UNI

Doubles

The doubles point came easy for the Maroon and Gold during Saturday's match against the Panthers. The duos of Ekin Ercetin/Dalila Said and Juliet Zhang/Bella Lambert clinched the win, 6-0 over their opponents. Although unfinished, Tiffany Huber/Cammy Frei led their match, 5-2.

Singles
The singles competition won the match for the Maroon and Gold. In the No. 1 singles spot, Dalila Said earned the first point over Harri Proudfoot 6-0, 6-1. All Gophers would go on to win their respective singles matches, most notably from sophomore Bella Lambert. She got the final point and earned her first singles win of the 2020 season against Valentina Caro 6-3, 6-3. 

MATCH 2: MINNESOTA vs NORTH DAKOTA

Doubles
Minnesota showed their dominance over North Dakota during doubles competition. The tandems of Tiffany Huber/Cammy Frei, Dalila Said/Ekin Ercetin and Juliet Zhang/Lucia de Santa Ana all defeated their opponents, 6-2. 

Singles
The Golden Gophers once again went undefeated during the singles competition. Every member of the University of Minnesota women's tennis team earned a point. Freshman Lucia de Santa Ana snagged her first singles win over Frida Soko 6-4, 6-0.

NOTABLE
Earning a sweep on the weekend, Minnesota improves their record to 4-2 on the year. Against both teams, the Gophers are undefeated (5-0 against UNI, 4-0 against UND). Underclassmen Bella Lambert and Lucia de Santa Ana earned their first wins on the season, each have a combined record of 2-0.

QUOTABLE
"We were excited to get a chance to compete at home this weekend," head coach Catrina Thompson said. "It was nice to give everyone that was healthy a chance to play. Everyone stepped up and did their jobs. Overall, it was a really good weekend and now we have to prepare for Iowa and Marquette."

UP NEXT
The University of Minnesota women's tennis team will be back at Baseline next weekend.
